Want to become a top-notch linebacker? This guide contains all the necessary information. It covers the basics of defense and advanced drills and tactics. With it, you'll have the skills and knowledge to be a successful linebacker.
Linebacker Strength Training
Linebackers on the field are the human equivalent of a bulldozer on caffeine - hit hard and run fast! Of course, you won’t be a human bulldozer if you don’t do linebacker strength training. To reach peak performance, linebacker strength training programs often involve a mix of:
Resistance training, with weightlifting to build upper and lower body strength.
Plyometric exercises, to increase power and acceleration.
Speed and agility drills, with quick changes in direction and reaction time.
Core training, to improve stability, balance, and functional movement.
As a linebacker, the type of lifts you should be doing are mainly compound lifts for strength, and explosive lifts for speed and agility.
Think bench press, landmine press, and kettlebell swings. Throw in some Bulgarian split squats and back/front squats for leg day as well. Of course a staple for explosiveness is also a hang clean! Practice great form and fast bar speed with all your lifts.
In order to tackle running backs and cover receivers in small amounts of space, linebackers must take their strength training seriously.
Linebacker Drills
Agility Drills: Ladder drills, cone drills, and shuttle runs. These focus on lateral movement, changing direction, and reaction. Using speed hurdles, cones, and a speed ladder you can create hundreds of drills. You can find all of these pieces of training equipment as well as all the linebacker drills you’ll need in the 5⭐️ Football Physical Package.
Tackling Drills: Form tackling with dummies or partners. The shoulder tackle, wrap tackle, and drive tackle.
Coverage Drills: Practice man-to-man, zone coverage, and pass drops. Learning to read the QB and defend passes. Make sure you are peaking for receivers even when they aren’t there.
Gap Filling Drills: Reading formations and filling gaps with speed and power.
Blitzing Drills: Timing blitzes with swim moves, spin moves, or bull rushes.
It's important to dedicate time and effort to these drills. Remember, you’re going to be grateful you did these speed drills on gameday when you’re up against a speedy slot receiver. You can find all the linebacker drills you’ll need in the 5⭐️ Football Package Linebacker Edition!

Linebacker Footwork Drills
Pro-tip: To up your game as a linebacker, try these 4 drills!
Cone Drills: Set up cones in a zigzag or square formation. Move quickly and precisely through each cone.
Shuffle Drills: Low stance, shuffle side-to-side. Keep the body positioned right, and change directions quickly.
Reaction Drills: Follow commands from coach/teammate. Sprint, backpedal, or switch directions based on auditory/visual cues.
Bag Drills: Step over/around bags while keeping balance and speed.
These drills develop agility, balance, reaction time, and coordination. Linebackers especially need to be able to quickly change direction and go full speed.
Let’s say the offense does a run pass option, you play the run and then quickly need to break to a hook curl zone to defend a slot receiver.
Again, all the drills, speed work, footwork, change of direction, body control, and more are programmed for you in the Linebacker Package!
How do you train like a Linebacker?
Linebacker Training:
Focus on these six steps to become an elite linebacker:
Strengthen your lower body with squats, jumps, cleans, hex bar deadlifts, and lunges.
Increase upper body power with bench presses, landmine presses, bent over rows, and explosive push-ups.
Improve speed and footwork with ladder drills and cone exercises.
Build explosive power with box jumps and medicine ball throws.
Practice tackling techniques and refine reaction time with agility drills.
Increase endurance with sprints and shuttle runs at least 2x a week.
How do you build a Linebacker Body?
To become a scary looking linebacker, you need specific training techniques and exercises. For a linebacker body, use compound exercises like squats and bench press, explosive exercises such as box jumps and medicine ball throws, plus speed and agility drills.
Keep in mind, to build muscle, you must eat a balanced diet so you can properly recover.
Proper linebacker recovery should look like this:

Nutrition: Eat a well-balanced diet with protein, carbs, fruits, vegetables, and hydrate hydrate hydrate! Electrolyte supplements are necessary!
Why do Linebackers have to be big?
Linebackers must be big, due to their role in football. This size helps them to stop the run and tackle effectively. Also, it gives them the strength to take on offensive linemen and shed blocks. Mass is needed for linebackers to do their job right. This weight helps them to withstand collisions with bigger offensive linemen while staying balanced and dominating ball carriers.
They need size and power to bring down running backs and tight ends. So, being big gives them an advantage in physical matchups and also makes it easier to intimidate their opponents. Being big will also keep you healthy and protected on the field!

Linebackers are one of the most important parts of the defense. They need to know how to cover, tackle, and read the offense. This being said, backers need the best gear to help them excel on the field. This is why we wrote the ultimate guide to Linebacker Gear.
Be sure to check out The Ultimate Guide to Runningback Gear.
Best Linebacker Helmets
Helmets are a necessity for linebackers in football because they provide protection against head injuries during tackles, hits, and, all types of contact. The helmet's hard shell and padding absorb the impact of hits and reduce the risk of skull fractures, concussions, and other brain injuries. Helmets also have a face mask that shields your face from accidental blows and eye injuries. Wearing helmets is necessary to keep linebackers safe and healthy while playing a physically demanding sport.
I recommend the Schutt F7 because of the new and innovative design and advanced technology. The Schutt has a hard Thermo Plastic shell allowing the helmet to absorb the impact of the hit. The helmet can also be adjusted for a perfect fit using the airliner and is a lightweight helmet. The Schutt F7 LTD is currently ranked number 3 on the Virginia Techs varsity football helmet rankings. The F7 allows for Linebackers to be able to see the field without limiting their vision. Overall, the Schutt F7 is a top choice for Linebackers who prioritize safety, comfort, and performance.
Another helmet I like is the Riddle SpeedFlex because it is overall one of the best linebacker helmets ever made. The Speedflex can be worn by any player at any position but it is fitting for linebackers because of the lightweight design that allows players to see and stay protected. For linebackers, this is important because they need to see the whole field in order to make a play. This helmet is widely considered as one of the best and safest and has been tested by various institutions such as the National Institute of Health. This is a perfect helmet for Linebackers because It looks cool (it's not a bucket) and keeps you safe.
Best Linebacker Pads
Pads are another important piece of gear for linebackers by providing protection to the shoulders by helping to absorb the impact of tackling. Linebackers use shoulder, hip, thigh, and knee pads. Shoulder pads should fit snugly on the shoulders and cover the collarbone and need to allow plenty of protection to make big hits. Hip, thigh, and knee pads must be worn inside the pants to provide additional protection to the hips and thighs.
The Riddell Phenom AP Adult Football Shoulder Pads offer excellent protection and comfort for Linebackers at every level. It is one of the best linebacker pads. These shoulder pads have great padding, which helps to absorb impact and keep players cool during games. The pads are designed to give the linebacker full range of motion, allowing them to play at their best. Overall, the Riddell Phenom AP Adult Football Shoulder Pads are a great choice for Linebackers looking for high-quality shoulder pads for football.
For a girdle or leg pants, I recommend the Nike Pro Hyperstrong Core Football Shorts. These are an excellent choice for linebackers who need protection and comfort during games. This girdle consists of a lightweight and breathable fabric that gets rid of any sweat to keep athletes dry and comfortable throughout the game by using the Nike Dryfit system.
The pads also have targeted padding in high-impact areas, such as the hips, thighs, and tailbone, to protect players from hard hits and falls. The flat-seam construction also helps to minimize irritation and chafing, helping players stay focused on the game. Overall, the Nike Pro Hyperstrong Core Football Shorts are an excellent choice for linebackers who want to stay protected. I also recommend the Champro Ultra Light Knee Pads to go along with the girdle.
Best Linebacker Gloves
Linebackers wear gloves to improve their grip on the ball carrier during tackles. The gloves are designed to provide a tacky surface that helps them hold onto the ball carrier even in wet or slippery conditions. Additionally, the gloves protect the hands from cuts that can happen because of tackles. By wearing gloves, linebackers can improve their performance and reduce the risk of injury. You also just feel better in gloves.
I recommend the Nike Superbad 6.0 Football Gloves because they are designed specifically for linebackers, providing excellent grip and protection on the field. These are some of the best linebacker gloves on the market.
The gloves are made with a breathable, flexible material that allows for maximum movement and comfort, while also featuring a reinforced thumb and index finger for added durability and to prevent linebackers from tweaking their thumbs. The gloves also have a Velcro strap for a secure fit and are available in a variety of colors to match what ever color your team wears. Overall, the Nike Superbad 6.0 Football Gloves are a top choice for linebackers who want to perform their best and stay protected during games.
Another pair that is good for linebackers is the Nike Vapor 7.0 football gloves which are designed again with linebackers and runningbacks in mind, offering a comfortable fit and superior grip for maximum performance on the field. The gloves have a breathable and flexible construction. The silicone grip pattern on the palm and fingers provides excellent control and stability when catching and holding onto the ball if you get a pic. Additionally, the gloves come with adjustable cuffs for a secure and personalized fit. Overall, the Nike Vapor 7.0 gloves are a great choice for linebackers looking to enhance their game.
Best Linebacker Cleats
Linebackers need to have a good pair of cleats because their position requires them to make quick and sudden movements like pivots, lateral steps, and changes in direction. Good cleats allow linebackers to have better traction and grip on the field, preventing slips and falls that could result in injuries. When you’re out there dropping in coverage and suddenly have to flip your hips, you can’t be worrying about slipping.
A pair of cleats I recommend for linebackers is the Nike Vapor Edge Shark Cleats. These cleats are perfect for outside linebackers who are primarily pass coverage players because they allow for great mobility to keep up with slot receivers. These cleats have great traction and they’re breathable which makes a big difference in the hottest weather.
Another pair of cleats I recommend is the Nike Strike Shark Cleats. Those are one of the best linebacker cleats on the market. These cleats are hightop which adds extra stability to the ankles which is better for inside and middle linebackers whose primary responsibility is to stop the run. These however can still allow for plenty of mobility and have great traction. They make you feel locked into place.
Linebacker Drip
One of my favorite ways to improve drip is with sleeves. Sleeves are used to keep your body cool in a hot environment and warm in a cold one. Sleeves can provide drip to wide receivers by just looking cool.
Note- if you play at the highschool level, do not wear drip (unless you’re really good) until you’re a junior or senior.
Another way to increase your drip is with a visor. Visors can be used to intimidate your opponent but also can make you look TUFF. Visors are a really cool way to show off style on the field. Be careful with these and be sure to check with your coach to see if you are allowed to use certain visors.
One common type of drip and one of my favorites is backplates. It's smart for everyone to have a backplate because it makes you play better. For defensive guys, it gives you more power when you tackle because you're less likely to fold over. For offense, you can drive harder and be better protected when you have one on. That being said I recommend the Battle Back Plate.
If you want to get more drip, you can also get headbands, gloves, eyeblack and cleats, turf tape, mouthguards, bicep bands, socks, facemasks, and so many more.
Overall, those recommendations are some of the best linebacker drip on the market.

D Line Drip
Drip or swag can be important for defensive linemen on the field as it can help boost their confidence and intimidate their opponents. By having a unique and stylish appearance, defensive linemen can create a presence on the field that demands attention and respect. Additionally, dressing well and looking good can help players feel good, which can translate to improved performance and focus during the game. However, it's important to note that while drip or swag can be beneficial, it should not take away from the player's primary focus of playing to the best of their ability and contributing to their team's success.
Back plates are one example of drip, they look cool and help improve stability. For defensive lineman, especially defensive ends can show off their style on the field.
Another way to increase your drip is with a visor. Visors can be used to intimidate your opponent but also can make you look TUFF. Visors are a really cool way to show off style on the field. Be careful with these and be sure to check with your coach to see if you are allowed to use certain visors.
If you want to get more drip, you can also get headbands, gloves, eyeblack and cleats, turf tape, mouthguards, bicep bands, socks, facemasks, and so many more.

Wide Receiver Helmets
A helmet is the most necessary piece of tools a Wide Receiver can wear. A football helmet provides safety to the player on the most important part of your body. The brain. With all the new studies about CTE these days it needs to have sufficient safety for the head and face while still having excellent visibility. There are many types of helmets available, however most receivers opt for the standard build with a 1 or 2 bar mask.
What are the best WR helmets?
I will always recommend the speed flex for any position because it is just one of the best helmets made. It is built to withstand big hits while keeping the player safe and the helmet is light not affecting play on the field. The speed flex has a zipper chinstrap and allows for it to be put on with relative eaze. This helmet is widely considered as one of the best and safest. It has been tested by various institutions such as the National Institute of Health. I recomend this helmet for Wide receivers because it has the drip factor and is very safe. This helmet allows for better eyesight then most.
Another Helmet I recommend for Wide Receivers is the Schutt F7 due to the innovative design and advanced technology. With its TPU cushioning system, the F7 absorbs impact and reduces the risk of head injuries. The helmet also features an air liner that gives the helmet a customized fit, for maximum comfort and protection during the game. Additionally, the F7's streamlined design and lightweight construction make it a great option for wide receivers who need to be quick and agile on the field. The F7 also has a very good outside design allowing for some drip factors. Overall, the Schutt F7 is a top choice for players who prioritize safety, comfort, and performance.
What is better the F7 or the Speed Flex?
It's hard to decide which is better between the Schutt F7 and the Riddell Speed Flex. Both helmets are popular among football players and have advanced technology and features. Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preference and specific needs.
Wide Receiver Pads
Pads are another important piece of gear for WR’s. They provide additional protection to the body and help absorb the impact of tackles and hits. Wide Receivers use shoulder, hip, thigh, and knee pads. Shoulder pads should fit snugly on the shoulders and cover the collarbone, but should still allow for mobility to catch the ball. Hip, thigh, and knee pads must be worn inside the pants to provide additional protection to the hips and thighs.
What are the best shoulder pads for a WR?
I recommend the Schutt XV HD Adult Football Shoulder Pads for wide receivers because of the mobility and durability that comes with these pads. These pads are both flexible and breathable and allow maximum mobility and comfort on gameday. The pads also have an adjustable fit system that allows for a perfect fit for all athletes, especially receivers. Additionally, the shoulder pads have top tier protection thanks to their high-density EVA foam and impact-resistant plastic shell. Overall, the Schutt XV HD Adult Football Shoulder Pads are an excellent choice for wide receivers who need both mobility and protection on the field.
What are good lower body pads for a WR?
Additionally for lower body padding I prefer the Nike Pro Hyperstrong Core Football Shorts. These are an excellent choice for wide receivers who need both protection and comfort during games. This girdle features a lightweight and breathable fabric that gets rid of any sweat to keep athletes dry and comfortable throughout the game. The pads also have targeted padding in high-impact areas, such as the hips, thighs, and tailbone, to protect players from hard hits and falls. The snug fit provides support and reduces muscle vibration, which can help to limit fatigue and improve performance. The flat-seam construction also helps to minimize irritation and chafing, helping players stay focused on the game. Overall, the Nike Pro Hyperstrong Core Football Shorts are an excellent choice for wide receivers who want to stay protected and comfortable on the field. I also recommend the Champro Ultra Light Knee Pad to tuck into your jersey.
Wide Receiver Gloves
Wide Receivers should use gloves because they provide extra grip while catching and they provide protection for the hands. Any good wideout can catch without gloves but gloves just improve that ability. They help reduce the risk of dropped passes and fumbling once it is caught. When you choose gloves, look for gloves that have style, good grip, and good durability.
I recommend the Nike Superbad 6.0 Receiver Gloves these gloves provide excellent grip and durability. These gloves provide padding and a high grip front to help absorb the impact of the ball. These gloves come in many different colors and styles so they are able to fit your teams colors.
I also would recommend the Nike Vapor 6.0 they're light, comfortable, grippy, and you can catch without hurting your hands. These also come in tons of different colors, so you can have gloves that stand out. The Vapors can help prevent fumbling and dropped passes.
Wide Receiver Cleats
Wide receivers need cleats that provide mobility, agility, and speed because they rely on their ability to quickly change direction and accelerate on the field. Low top cleats and lightweight design can help wide receivers move effortlessly. A good pair of cleats can also help a receiver's footwork, allowing them to make cuts and jukes. Cleats can also help improve balance on all types of turf. Overall, cleats that provide mobility, agility, and speed can give wide receivers a competitive edge by allowing them to play their best on the field.
The Nike Vapor Edge Pro 360 is an excellent choice for wide receivers looking for a cleat that offers both mobility and agility. With the low cut design and lightweight build, these cleats allow receivers to improve change of direction and increase mobility. The cleats' 360-degree Flywire support system provides a secure and comfortable fit, improving a receiver's ability to perform at their best on the field.
Another cleat I like is the Adidas Adizero cleats because of the lightweight and flexible design that allows for quick cuts and changes of direction on the field. The Adizero's grip allows for players to have traction on turf and grass surfaces, while the breathable material keeps your feet cool and comfortable during the game. Due to the low cut design of the Adidas Adizero is a top choice for any wide receiver looking to improve their speed and agility on the field.
Wide Receiver Drip
Drip is not the most necessary gear on the field but it can show off a players personal style and personality. Drip is a player's fashion and personal style, and is everything from their sleeves and undershirt to their gloves and cleats. Wide receivers can use drip to show off swag on and off the field. Some players prefer bright colors, while others like subtle styles. Ultimately, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in your gear, so you can focus on the game.
One of my favorite ways to improve drip is with sleeves. Sleeves are used to keep your body cool in a hot environment and warm in a cold one. Sleeves can provide drip to wide receivers by just looking cool.
Another way to increase your drip is with a visor. Visors can be used to intimidate your opponent but also can make you look TUFF. Visors are a really cool way to show off style on the field. Be careful with these and be sure to check with your coach to see if you are allowed to use certain visors.
For a receiver cool and good looking gloves can really improve your drip. Gloves can have very cool patterns such as the joker and the battle gloves have cool patterns. They can help you look cooler on the field and you will feel like you have more confidence with a good pair.
If you want to get more drip, you can also get headbands, backplates, eyeblack and cleats, turf tape, mouthguards, bicep bands, socks, facemasks, and so many more.

With this ultimate guide to running back gear, you'll be able to perform at your best and stay safe on the field.
Running backs are an essential part of any football team's offense and need the right equipment to perform at their best. The right equipment can make a big difference to a player's performance and safety, and it's important to understand what to consider when choosing football gear. From helmets and pads to gloves and cleats, we cover everything including how to show off your personal style when you get into the ultimate guide to Running Back gear.
HELMET
A helmet is the most important piece of equipment a football player can wear. A football helmet should fit well on the head, without sliding or slipping. It should also provide adequate protection for the head and face while allowing good visibility. There are many types of helmets available, but most backs prefer the traditional style with a full face mask.
From personal experience, I recommend the Riddle Speed Flex. This is the most popular helmet on the market and for good reason. The Speed Flex gives a tight snug fit without putting too much pressure on your head. The chinstrap is easy to get on and off with a zipper on each side to strap it in. Speed Flexes are considered a top 10 helmet (Currently #6 on Virginia Techs Varsity Football Helmet Rankings) and use a polycarbonate shell which is very durable and equally distributes the impact. I recommend this helmet it is one of the safest helmets out there and it is light and durable so it doesn't affect your play on the field.
I would also recommend the Xenith Shadow XR football helmet. Speaking from personal use, this is a high-quality helmet that offers excellent comfort and protection for running backs on the field. With its advanced shock-absorbing system this helmet provides impact protection without sacrificing performance. They design this to be a lightweight helmet but it felt heavy on my head, and my hemet was clearly heavier then the Speedflex. However, after I got used to the weight It was no longer a problem. The customizable fit system has a snug and secure fit for all running backs. Overall, the Xenith Shadow XR is an excellent choice for a RB looking for a safe football helmet.
PADS
Pads are another essential piece of equipment for an RB. They provide additional protection to the body and help reduce the impact of tackles. Running backs use shoulder, hip, and thigh pads. Shoulder pads should fit snugly on the shoulders and cover the collarbone. Hip and thigh protectors must be worn inside the pants to provide additional protection to the hips and thighs.
The Xenith Element Hybrid Varsity Football Shoulder Pads are the perfect fit for running backs. With lightweight protection, you’ll be able to move easily, which everyone has to be able to do. These pads also don’t restrict too much motion and come with belts to keep you secure in the pads. Additionally these pads are breathable, moisture-wicking, have a four-way stretch (so you can get them on easily), and are compressed. They will allow you to absorb impact from tackles and allow you to hopefully stay injury free. I know several people who have broken their collarbones through tackles because they didn’t have good pads. Whether you get these pads or a different pair do your research.
For a girdle or leg pads I recommend the Under Armour Game Day 5-Pad Girdle. This is a high quality girdle you can wear under your jersey pants. These are top notch quality however you will need to get knee pads from either your coach or online. If you are looking for knee pads I recommend the Champro Ultra Light Knee Pad.
GLOVES
Gloves are not required, but they can offer many advantages to running backs. They provide a better grip on the ball, which reduces the possibility of fumbling. They can also protect your hands from cuts and scratches. When choosing gloves, look for gloves with good grip and breathability. Fit is also important because gloves that are too tight or too loose can limit your performance. The gloves that do all of those things are the Nike Vapor 6.0's
The Nike Vapor 6.0s are great because they do everything well, just like a good running back. They're light, comfortable, grippy, and you can catch without hurting your hands. These also come in tons of different colors, so you can have gloves that stand out. The Vapors can help prevent fumbling.
Another pair of gloves I recommend are the battle football gloves. Battle has been one of the top gear distributors on the market over recent years and their gloves have been some of the best. These gloves are very sticky and they also tie into the drip factor which we will talk about later. I would recommend these gloves.
CLEATS
Cleats are perhaps the most critical piece of equipment for a RB, as they directly affect their ability to move quickly and change direction. There are many types of cleats available, but running backs typically prefer those with shorter spikes for better traction on grass or artificial turf. When choosing cleats, look for a comfortable fit that provides good support in the feet and ankles.
Also be sure to check out my guide on the 5 Best Running Back Cleats.
My personal favorite cleats for running backs are the Nike Vapor Untouchable 3. These are one of the best pairs of cleats to wear if you're a running back since it takes everything from the original Nike Vapor Untouchable and elevates it to a new level. These cleats have received an improvement in terms of appearance in addition to better performance. This set of high-performance cleats will improve your agility and speed from every angle.
Another cleat I like is the Nike Alpha Strike 2 Three-Quarter Running Football Cleat. The Alpha Strike 2 Three-Quarter Support offers both comfort and performance, making it a solid choice for the RB. The three-quarter construction provides excellent ankle support without affecting mobility. Synthetic leather provides maximum durability and a comfortable fit, while a dual traction system provides a secure and locked-in feel. The TPU plate has a 12-joint structure that provides optimal grip for quick acceleration and quick lateral movement on the field. I enjoyed using these cleats during my sophomore season of high school. These cleats allowed me to have lots of agility and mobility on the field.
When I grew out of this pair of cleats I found the Nike Men's Alpha Menace 3 Shark Mid Football Cleats. I was surprised to find out that these actually have more mobility and range of motion than the previously mentioned Alpha strike. These are similar cleats to the Strikes but these actually gave me more ankle stability and surprisingly more mobility than the Strikes. Normally in cleats you have to sacrifice Stability for mobility but not these.
DRIP
While not technically gear, a player's style on the field can have a significant impact on their confidence and performance. Drip is basically a player's fashion and personal style, and can include everything from their socks and undershirt to their gloves and cleats. Running backs can use drip to show off swag and in some cases intimidate. Some players prefer bold, bright colors, while others like a more subdued look. Ultimately, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in your gear, so you can focus on the game.
One common type of drip and one of my favorites is backplates. It's smart for everyone to have a backplate, because it makes you play better. For defensive guys, it gives you more power when you tackle because you're less likely to fold over. For offense, you can drive harder and be better protected when you have one on. That being said I recommend the Battle Back Plate.
This backplate gives protection for the spine and lower back with foam cushion. It helps absorb impact of falling and getting tackled.
You can also improve drip with sleeves. There are many benefits of sleeves for football one of which is it makes you look dripped out. It also can help provide warmth in a cold game and can cool you down in a hot one.
Another way to add drip during a game is to put on eye black. Eye black has been used for a long time in many sports. Eye black can make you look tougher on the field and it also has a benefit by keeping sun out of your eyes.
If you want to get more drip, you can also get headbands, visors, gloves and cleats (previously mentioned), turf tape, mouth-guards, bicep bands, socks, face-masks, and so many more.

Criteria For Buying The Best Football Cleats For Running Backs
Determine Your Playing Style
Running backs have different playing styles, so it's important to choose cleats that suit your individual needs. Power runners may benefit from stronger, more supportive cleats, while Others may prefer lightweight options that allow for quick acceleration and quick cuts.
Choose the Right Cleat Type
Football cleats come in three primary types: molded, detachable, and turf. Molded cleats have studs permanently attached to the shoe and are suitable for most field conditions. Detachable cleats allow you to swap out studs for different lengths, allowing you to adapt to different field conditions. Turf cleats, which have smaller rubber nubs, are specifically designed for artificial turf fields.
Consider Ankle Support
Ankle support is crucial for running backs, it helps prevent injuries and provides stability during lateral movements. High-top cleats offer the most ankle support but may limit mobility. Mid-top cleats strike a balance between support and mobility, while low-top cleats provide maximum agility at the cost of less ankle support.
Focus on Traction
Good traction is essential for running backs to maintain their footing during rapid changes of direction and acceleration. Look for cleats with a variety of stud patterns and configurations to ensure optimal grip on the field.
Prioritize Comfort
Comfort is critical for running backs who need to remain focused and agile throughout the game. Look for cleats with breathable materials, cushioning, and a snug fit to prevent blisters and discomfort during play.
Take Note of Material and Durability
Investing in cleats made from high-quality materials is essential for running backs who demand longevity and durability. Synthetic materials like leather and mesh provide a good balance between durability and breathability.
Don't Forget Style
Although performance should be the top priority, there's nothing wrong with considering style and drip when choosing football cleats. Look for designs and colors that match your team's uniform or showcase your personality on the field.
By considering these factors and understanding your individual preferences and playing style, you'll be well-equipped to find the perfect pair of football cleats to optimize your performance as a running back.
Cleats Worn By NFL Starting Running Backs
The cleats worn by NFL starting running backs are a crucial part of their performance on the field. These specialized shoes provide the necessary traction, stability, and support needed for quick movements, sharp cuts, and explosive bursts of speed.
The truth is, running backs change up their cleats a lot. Christian McCaffrey, Derrick Henry, and other top backs use a variety of different cleats. One thing, however, remains the same. All running back cleats let RB's make cuts, accelerate, and explode on the field.
The BEST Football Cleats for Skill Positions
Learn what the best cleats are for skill positions! Nike Vapors, Adidas Zeros, or Under Armour Blur Smoke MC’s!
Football is a sport that requires speed, agility, and precision. To excel in skill positions such as wide receiver, corner, running back, safety, and quarterback, players need to have the right gear, including cleats. Cleats provide players with traction, support, and comfort, which are essential for making quick cuts, accelerating, and stopping on a dime. In this blog, we'll explore the key features of football cleats for skill positions and the top brands that offer them.
We will cover the best cleats for corners, safeties, running backs, wide receivers, and quarterbacks!
Key Features of Football Cleats for Skill Positions
Traction - Cleats with good traction are crucial for skill positions, because they allow players to make quick cuts and accelerate without slipping. Look for cleats with multidirectional studs that provide grip on both grass and turf. To make big plays you need to put a lot of force in the ground quickly and quality cleats with great traction is highly necessary.
Comfort - Skill position players need to be able to move quickly and comfortably. Cleats with good cushioning and a snug fit will reduce the risk of blisters and injuries. Playing with blisters or aching feet is definitely going to hurt your performance, so comfort is key!
Support - Football cleats should provide ample support to the ankle and foot to prevent injuries. Look for cleats with ankle support and a stiff sole that will keep your foot stable. There’s a fine line between getting light cleats with no support and heavy cleats with too much support that will slow you down.
Durability - Football is a contact sport, so cleats need to be durable enough to withstand wear and tear. Look for cleats with sturdy materials and a reputable name so you don’t have to worry about blowing your cleats during a game or practice.
Weight - Lighter cleats are ideal for skill position players, as they allow for faster movement and better agility. The lightest cleats may not always be the best, though. It’s important to weigh all the considerations and features above.
Top Brands for Football Cleats for Skill Positions
There are many brands that offer football cleats for skill positions, but it’s best to stick with the following three that can guarantee the following considerations from above.
Nike - Nike is a popular brand that offers a range of cleats for skill positions. Their cleats feature Flywire technology, which provides support and stability, as well as innovative stud designs that enhance traction. Nike Vapors are easily the best option for skill positions. There are a couple vacations of the Vapors, but definitely stick with the Vapors if you are choosing Nike. Personally, I would recommend the Nike Vapor Edge 360 Speed Cleats. The low cleats will allow for the most speed on the field. I would highly recommend these cleats if you’re looking for a solid cleat that will last a whole season.
Adidas - Adidas is another well-known brand that offers cleats for skill positions. Their cleats feature Boost technology, which provides excellent cushioning and energy return, and Sprintframe construction for added stability. Addidas offers the lightest cleats on the market with their Adizeros. Although they are the lightest, they tend to breakdown earlier because they are designed to be very light. If you’re looking for superior speed and have strong feet this could be a good option for you. Personally, these cleats hurt my feet so I switched to Nike and Under Armour. I didn’t dislike the cleats, but never went back once I changed if that tells you anything.
Under Armour - Under Armour offers a variety of cleats for skill positions that provide excellent traction and support. Their cleats feature Charged Cushioning technology, which provides responsive cushioning and energy return. Under Armour offers their Blur Smoke MC’s which are a very solid cleat. These cleats were my favorite in terms of comfort and overall performance, but my first pair blew apart after a month. If you’re willing to take the risk I’d definitely recommend these cleats.
Comparison of Top Football Cleats for Skill Positions
To help you choose the best football cleats for skill positions, we've compared the top brands based on key features:
Traction - Nike's cleats offer excellent traction on both grass and turf, thanks to their innovative stud designs. Adidas cleats also provide good traction, but they are more suited for turf fields. Under Armour cleats offer good traction, but they may not be as durable as Nike or Adidas cleats. Traction will also depend on your height and weight, but if you’re 230 pounds like me the Nike Vapors wins this category.
Comfort - All three brands offer cleats with good cushioning and a snug fit, but the Under Armour Blur Smoke MC’s take this category for sure. The Adizero’s may hurt your feet because they are so thin, and the new ghost shoelace cleat tech on the Nike Vapors makes the cleat a little stiffer.
Support - Nike’s cleats offer excellent ankle support and a stiff sole that keeps the foot stable. Adidas's Sprintframe construction also provides added stability, but their cleats may not be as supportive as Nike's. Under Armour's cleats provide good support, but they may not be as durable as Nike or Adidas cleats. The Nike Vapors sweep this category once again. If you have feet or ankle problems, I’d run the the Vapors. Keep in mind the ankle sleeve may hinder your ability to wear an ankle brace so stick with the lows.
Durability - Nike's cleats are the most durable, thanks to their sturdy materials and reinforced stitching. Adidas's cleats are also durable, but their Boost technology may wear down over time. Under Armour's cleats may not be as durable as Nike or Adidas cleats. I guess the Nike Vapors win again.
Weight - Adizeros are the lightest, and the Nike Vapors and Under Armour Blur Smoke MC’s are about the same in weight.
Price - Nike and Adidas cleats tend to be more expensive than Under Armour cleats, but they offer better overall performance and durability. But again, I loved the Under Armour Blur Smoke MC’s.
Based on these comparisons, the Nike Vapor cleats are the best option for skill position players. Their cleats offer excellent traction, comfort, support, and durability, making them a top choice for football players of all levels. While they may be more expensive than other brands, the investment is worth it for the enhanced performance they provide on the field. They also last the longest in my experiences.
When it comes to football cleats for skill positions, there are many factors to consider, including traction, comfort, support, durability, and weight. To test these cleats effectively you should make sure you workout properly on the field. More about how you should train like a Football Player on the field can be found in my article “Mastering The Game: The Top Football Drills.” And for the additional equipment you need make sure you take a peak at “The Best Football Training Equipment You Need For Success.” Nike's cleats are the best option for skill position players, as they offer a superior combination of these features. However, it's important to try on multiple brands and styles of cleats to find the right fit for your individual needs. With the right cleats, you can enhance your performance on the field and take your game to the next level. If you stick with these 3 cleats you’ll get a solid cleat regardless. Over the next couple years I’d recommend trying them all! The difference is noticeable, but like anything, you adapt. Wearing Adizeros versus Blur Smoke MC’s won’t noticeably effect your game, but there are definitely considerations to make. Also, consider that once you go to college you may have to wear their brand sponsored cleat. This is why it’s important to try other cleats! Football is a physically demanding sport that requires a combination of skill, strength, and endurance. To excel on the field, players must have access to the best equipment for football training. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, having the right equipment can help you improve your game and achieve success. But the question is, what equipment is the best equipment? Is some equipment unnecessary?
Football is a physically demanding sport that requires a combination of skill, strength, and endurance. To excel on the field, players must have access to the best equipment for football training. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, having the right equipment can help you improve your game and achieve success. But the question is, what equipment is the best equipment? Is some equipment unnecessary?
In this article, we'll discuss some of the essential equipment you need for football training, as well as the best ways to train for football on the field.
What is the BEST equipment for football training?
There are several pieces of equipment that are essential for football training. Here are some of the most important (in order):
Footballs - Having a quality football is essential for practicing your passing, catching, and throwing skills. Unless you play offensive line, you need to be able to catch. When you get a chance to make a play on the ball you need to make the play if you want to play Division 1 or professional football.
Cones - Cones are used to mark off areas on the field for drills and exercises. There are thousands of drills you can do with just cones. You can use cones for basic speed drills, positional drills, or even advanced agility drills. Cones should be the very first piece of equipment outside of cleats and a football in your arsenal.
Agility Ladders - These ladders are used for footwork drills to improve speed and agility. Even though a speed ladder’s on field benefits aren’t super apparent, you need to have advanced footwork ability to be an advanced football player. Having great footwork will also help you stay healthy and uninjured on the field. Building coordination and fast feet is a necessary component to becoming a better player.
Hurdles – Hurdles are a great tool to teach you how to pick your feet up. If you’re a player who stumbles on their own feet the hurdles can help you develop. You can use hurdles for lateral speed, change or direction, or even teaching yourself good run form.
Resistance Bands - Resistance bands are great for building strength and improving flexibility. Just like in the weight room resistance on the field is important too. Bands are also great for warming up and cooling down which is necessary for longevity on the field.
Training Sleds/Parachutes - Training sleds are used for resistance training and can help improve speed and power. You should try to run with resisted training at least one time a week. You can use a parachute, sled, or pull a weight behind you when running. Not highly necessary, but beneficial.
What is the best way to train for football?
There are several ways to train for football on the field, but the most effective methods involve a combination of speed training, conditioning, positional training, and combine speed training.
Speed Training - This type of training could be linear or directional speed training. In the game of football it’s important for you to be fast forwards, backwards, side to side, and on a radial plane (meaning curved line). You should so this type of training with max effort two times a week.
Examples of this type of speed training are, push-up sprints, 40 yard dashes, backwards runs, lateral kneeling 10 yard get-offs, and weaving sprints.
Conditioning – Conditioning is something you should be doing at the end of your workouts. Or select one day a week to do it by itself. If you do it this way make sure you emphasize run form before your conditioning. This style of training should involve high intensity interval training like sprints. Running long distance is not beneficial for football players.
Examples of this type of training could be, shuttle runs, 100 yard sprints, rapid fire agility drills with little rest.
Positional Training – The most important style of training for football players is positional training. These include a vast variety of drills, footwork, and catching. Positional training can involve speed training, conditioning, footwork, and change of direction. It’s important to perform these drills two times a week. Drills will vary depending on your position and what your team specifically runs. Ideally, practice what you would do in a game situation so on the field you can make big plays because you’ve repped it many times. It’s HIGHLY important if you are a skill or big skill player to catch as much as you can.
Examples of this could be pass drops for a linebacker, a 5 yard out route for a tight end, a deep 3rd drop for a defensive back, lateral reaction training for a running back, or quarterback accuracy drills.
Combine Speed Training – Combine speed training is something you are going to be running at camps and combines in the summer as a high school football player. If you have aspirations to play professional football you will also run these drills at your pro day or the NFL Combine. These drills are ran to test your change or direction speed and overall ability as a football player. Performing these drills in your training will benefit you greatly as a football player.
Examples of this are the 3 cone drill, 20 yard shuttle, 40 yard dash, vertical jump, and broad jump.
A good field split you can follow is…
Day 1: Speed Training
Day 2: Positional Training
Day 3: Speed Training + Positional Training
Day 4: Light Footwork
What equipment do NFL players use?
NFL players use a variety of equipment to train for football. In addition to the equipment mentioned above, they also use specialized gear for advanced training which is likely not necessary for you right now. If you are reading this you must continue to work foundational movements. NFL Players see professional trainers to continue to refine their ability which is likely unproductive for you.
They also use technology to help improve their performance, such as GPS trackers to monitor their speed and agility, force, velocity, and more. Again, they must work to finely refine their ability while you have a far way to go. So keep it simple and keep it max effort.
In conclusion, football is a challenging sport that requires dedication and hard work. By investing in the right equipment and following a well-rounded training regimen (5 Star Football Package), you can improve your skills and achieve success on the field. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, remember that the key to success is consistency, hard work, and perseverance.
HSFB Summer Prospective Camps
High School Football Prospective Summer camps can be overwhelming. This blog will teach you everything you need to know about them!
If you're a high school football player, you may be wondering how to get noticed by college coaches and recruiters… Summer Camps can be overwhelming, but they are highly necessary. I’m willing to bet you’ve either received TONS of “personal” invites to camps or have received nothing at all. Either way, where do you go from here? Let’s dive in!
Attending football camps is a great way to get your name out there and showcase your skills. In this blog post, we'll answer some common questions about high school football prospective camps and provide tips for getting noticed in the world of high school football.
First, let's talk about the best high school football camps. Some of the most reputable and highly-rated camps include the Adidas Rivals Camps, Under Armour All-America Camps, and The Opening Camps. These camps are known for their high level of competition and top-notch coaching staffs. Attending one of these camps can be a great way to improve your skills and get noticed by college coaches. BUT, not everyone can attend the actual camp. They are elite for a reason! If you want to attend you must attend one of their combines, test your numbers, and be reviewed to see if you have the measurables to be invited to the actual camp with other top prospects. I would highly recommend these combines to get your official numbers and get a baseline early in the summer. If you get invited GREAT! If not, you got to train with some of the top rated players in the country and get your official times to work off of. I would recommend finding the combine closest to you and attending that! Just pick one, though it really doesn’t matter.
But are other football prospect camps worth it? There are showcases, school camps, 3rd party camps, and other small camps you can find. These types of camps are geared specifically towards players who are interested in playing college football. They provide an opportunity to showcase your skills in front of college coaches and recruiters. However, they can be expensive and may not guarantee exposure to college programs. Some require a lot of travel, which may not even be worth it. My advice is to research the camps thoroughly before deciding to attend one - I’ll tell you more about what you should look for below.
If you’re not a rated player or currently have a ton of D1 interest I would HIGHLY recommend sticking to your local region and local schools. If you don’t hold a D1 FCS offer how can you expect to go get an FBS offer? Before anything, attack your local FCS Schools and secure a small offer, then move up! All school hosted camps are definitely worth it, but expenses can add up quick with extensive travel, hotel rooms, food, and more, so sticking local (preferably driving distance) is a great way for you to save and start building some local hype. All local D2 and D3 schools attend these FCS camps, so I would stick to the local FCS Camps to start.
You MUST be realistic for this phase. Me personally, I was not. I drug my mother across the country in hopes to pick up big time D1 offers from camps when it was totally unrealistic. Power 5 Schools already have their recruits and unless you put on an absolute show at their camps you won’t get noticed = wasted time and money. Also, most Power 5 Camps have thousands of players there, so your chances aren’t great. Go to a local FCS camp where you can work 1 on 1 with their positional coach, establish a relationship, and build a future connection.
BEWARE: Just like there are TONS of great camps you can attend, there is also a lot of BS camps just looking to make a quick buck off of you. They may promise 20+ big schools, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t lying. Here’s a good rule of thumb - stick to school camps. Anything outside of that is not guaranteed. I’m hoping to launch some camps this summer to give you all some insane value, but outside of that beware and do your do-diligence. You can always DM me and ask my opinion, could save you tons of money and time!
Exception: Lauren’s First and Goal Camp - I LOVED this camp! For a great cause and a lot of big schools were in attendance.
Also! Schools will "personally” invite you to their camps just to get them filled. Unless you’ve talked to a coach specifically it’s likely just something they sent to a list of a bunch of kids. These invites can come in the form of email or mail! Just know that if you have never talked to the Head Coach of a school in your life and he sends you a camp invite randomly, it’s not him… But if it’s within driving distance (5 hours max) go for it!
Now, let's talk about how to get noticed in high school football. One of the best ways to get noticed is to attend football camps and showcases (and ball out!). It's important to build relationships with coaches and recruiters, both in person and on social media. Take the extra 30 minutes after the camp to introduce yourself to the coach, look them in their eyes, shake their hand, give them an athletic business card, and tell them thank you. You should also focus on improving your skills and performance on the field. One big time catch, interception, shove, or play can get you put on the ESPN Top 10 if it’s filmed - think about it (and always film your reps at camp)… Ball out and give it everything you got!
Now, let's talk about the physical requirements for playing football at the Division 1 level. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, most Division 1 football players are at least 6 feet tall and weigh over 200 pounds. However, there are exceptions to this rule. It's important to focus on building muscle and gaining weight in a healthy way, rather than just trying to hit a certain number on the scale. This is where contrast training, plyos, speed training, positional training, rest, recovery and more come into play. (hint hint*** 5 Star Football Package has all this done for you and will prepare you for combines with the combine prep within all packages!!)
If you're a parent looking to get your child scouted for football, attending football camps is a great way to get noticed by college coaches and recruiters. You should also focus on building relationships with coaches and recruiters, both in person and on social media. Encourage your child to work hard and focus on improving their skills on the field. Investing in one of my packages is a great start. Worst possible scenario - it doesn’t work and I give you your money back no questions asked. But, I’m not worried, because everyone who has gotten it has seen absolutely insane results - i expect no different for your son!
In conclusion, attending football camps and showcases is a great way to get noticed by college coaches and recruiters. It is something you need to do this summer is you are a freshman or older. Whether you're a quarterback, a lineman, or a wide receiver, there are camps and showcases available to help you improve your skills and get noticed. However, it's important to do your research and choose the camp that's right for you. While some camps may be expensive, they can be a worthwhile investment if they lead to exposure to college programs.
Remember, playing football at the college level takes dedication and hard work. But with the right mindset, work ethic, and exposure, you can turn your high school football career into a stepping stone towards a successful college football career. Good luck!

Players need to be able to quickly change direction, accelerate, and decelerate in order to succeed on the field. To develop these skills, players can incorporate several different types of speed and agility training into their routines.
Positional Training
Positional training is crucial in American Football as each position requires specific skills and attributes such as speed, agility, strength, and power. Training for specific positions allows players to improve their overall performance and hone in on the unique demands of their position. By participating in position-specific drills, players can improve their reaction time, coordination, balance, and muscle memory.
For example, quarterback drills can help improve their accuracy and arm strength, while receiver drills can help improve their route running and catching abilities. Running back drills can help improve their agility and explosiveness, while lineman drills can help improve their strength and power in the trenches.
Defensive positions also have specific demands, with linebacker drills focusing on tackling and reaction time, while defensive back drills emphasize coverage skills and reaction time.
It's essential to remember that while positional training is important, it should not be done in isolation. It should be incorporated into an overall training program that includes plyometric training, speed and agility training, functional movement training, and strength endurance training.
Incorporating sport-specific drills into a well-rounded training program can help players improve their performance and decrease their risk of injury. Regularly participating in positional training, combined with a healthy diet, proper hydration, sleep management, and physical therapy as needed, can lead to success on the field.
Plyometric Training
Plyometric training is a form of high-intensity, explosive jumping exercise that helps to improve power, speed, body control, and agility. This type of training involves activities such as jumping, bounding, and hopping, and it can be performed with equipment like medicine balls, cones, boxes, hurdles, and more. Plyometrics can be especially beneficial for developing the quick, explosive movements needed for success on the football field.

Speed ladder drills can be performed in a variety of ways, and can be adjusted to focus on specific skills, such as quick feet or improved agility.
Parachute Training
Parachute training involves running while wearing a special harness that has a parachute attached. The resistance provided by the parachute helps to increase the intensity of the workout, while also improving acceleration and speed. Parachute training can be a great way to add variety to a speed and agility training routine.
Hurdles and Sleds
Hurdles and sleds can be used to improve agility and speed, as well as to develop strength and endurance. Hurdles are typically used for footwork drills, while sleds can be pushed or pulled for resistance training. Both hurdles and sleds can be adjusted to match the skill level of the player and can be used to target specific areas for improvement.
Agility Cones and Footwork Drills
Agility cones and footwork drills are a great way to develop quickness and improve reaction time. These drills can be performed in a variety of ways, such as running through cones, jumping over them, or performing quick changes of direction. Footwork drills can also be incorporated into agility cone training, helping players to improve their footwork and balance.
In conclusion, incorporating speed and agility training into a workout routine can help American football players improve their performance on the field. Plyometric training, speed ladder drills, parachute training, hurdles and sleds, and agility cones and footwork drills are just a few of the options available for players looking to improve their speed and agility. With consistent practice and dedication, players can develop the skills they need to succeed in this fast-paced sport.
Strength Training:
Strength training is an essential component of American Football and is necessary for building power, speed, and endurance. Here are some of the most effective strength training methods for American Football players:
Olympic Lifting
Olympic lifting is a type of strength training that focuses on dynamic, full-body, compound movements. Exercises like the clean and the snatch can help build explosiveness and power, essential for many positions in American Football. Olympic lifting should be performed with proper technique and lighter load until one is very proficient at the lift.
Dumbbells, Barbells, and Kettlebells
This weightlifting equipment can be used to perform a variety of exercises for strength training, such as bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder press, and lat pulldowns. They are versatile and can be adjusted to accommodate for different levels of fitness and strength.
Medicine Balls and Battle Ropes
Medicine balls and battle ropes are effective tools for building explosiveness and power, especially in the upper body and core. Exercises like slams and waves with a medicine ball and rope slams with battle ropes can help increase power and endurance.
Squats, Hex Bar Deadlifts, Bench Press, and Barbell Rows
These exercises are staple strength training movements that target multiple muscle groups, including the legs, back, chest, and arms. They can help build overall strength and power, essential for success in Football.
Contrast Training
Contrast training is a strength training method that involves alternating sets of heavy lifting with plyometric exercises. This type of training helps to increase power and explosiveness, making it an effective training method for Football players.
Incorporating strength training into your overall training program can help build power, speed, and endurance, all essential for success in Football. As with any type of training, it's crucial to start with proper technique and progress gradually, avoiding injury. Regular strength training, combined with sport-specific drills, can lead to improved performance and reduced risk of injury on the field. You can find all of these techniques programmed for you in the D1 Workout Plans within the 5 Star Football Package!
Nutrition and Recovery:
Nutrition and recovery are critical components of a successful American football training program. Here are some important factors to consider in this area:
Sleep Management, Hydration, and Supplements
Adequate sleep is crucial for optimal performance on the field. Getting seven to eight hours of quality sleep every night can help you perform at your best and reduce the risk of injury. Hydration is also crucial, as it helps you maintain energy levels and prevents dehydration. It's recommended to drink at least 16 ounces of water two hours before your workout and at least 20 ounces of water every hour during your workout. Electrolyte supplements may be necessary after a very sweaty workout as well. Supplements can also play a role in improving performance, but it's important to consult with a doctor or registered dietitian before taking any new supplements.
Physical Therapy and Injury Prevention
Injuries are a common part of the game, but steps can be taken to reduce the risk of injury. Regular physical therapy and injury prevention programs can help keep you healthy and on the field. This can include techniques such as myofascial release, neural mobilization, and joint stabilization/flexibility training.
Nutrition and Hydration for Optimal Performance
Proper nutrition and hydration are key components of a successful training program. Eating a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats can help fuel your body and promote muscle growth. Hydrating before, during, and after training is also important, as it helps regulate body temperature and prevent dehydration. Aim to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day and consume 20-30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of completing a workout. Prioritize protein in every one of your meals. Aim for 1 gram per pound of lean body mass a day.
Remember, the right nutrition and recovery plan is unique to each player, and it's important to work with a doctor, registered dietitian, or physical therapist to find a plan that works best for you. Precise scheduling, proper nutrition, and highly beneficial daily mobility and injury guides can be found in the 5 Star Football Package Seasonal or Positional Packages.
